Elio is a 17-year-old Italian Jew who lives in the countryside of northern Italy with his parents. Elio's father was a professor of archaeology. He invited Oliver, a 24-year-old Jewish graduate student, to spend the summer with his family and help his scientists. Elio is an independent bibliophile and talented musician who initially thought he had nothing in common with Oliver, who seemed confident and carefree. Elio spent most of his summer vacation reading, playing the piano, and spending time with his childhood friends Chiara and Marcia. In a volleyball match, Oliver touched Elio's back and expressed interest, but Elio ignored him. Elio later became jealous when seeing Oliver following Chiara.
